Description
This beautiful Agatised Gastropod fossil is from the Devonian period, approximately 400 million years ago, and was discovered in Madagascar. Gastropods, commonly known as snails, were abundant in ancient marine environments, and this fossil is an exceptional example of their early evolution. What makes this fossil particularly special is that it has undergone a process known as agatization, where the original organic material was replaced by the mineral agate over millions of years, preserving its detailed structure.
Agatization is a rare and fascinating natural process. When a fossil is buried in sediment rich in silica, groundwater carries silica into the fossil, gradually replacing the original organic material with agate. This mineralization process enhances the fossil’s durability while giving it a striking, gem-like appearance, often displaying beautiful patterns and colors.
Each fossil is unique, and the photo provided shows an example of the specimen you will receive. The size of the gastropods ranges between 40-70mm, and a scale cube (1cm) is included in the images for reference. This agatised gastropod has been carefully chosen and prepared to ensure its quality and authenticity.
As with all of our fossils, this Agatised Gastropod comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing that it is a 100% genuine specimen.
