The spectacular Yin Yang style of the piece creates two compartments, which would make it an impressive double serving dish at parties. It is made from the famous Black Marble of Morocco, and has been carved out, and polished around two genuine Goniatite fossils. These Goniatite sea creatures are Devonian age.

Goniatite are Ammonoid Cephalopods that form the order Goniatida, derived from the more primitive Anarcestida during the Middle Devonian some 390 million years ago. Goniatites survived the Late Devonian to flourish in the oceans during the Carboniferous and Permian only to become wiped out at the end of the Permian some 139 million years later. The order of Goniatida belongs to the squidlike class, Cephalopoda, and the phylum molluscs, Mollusca.

Orthoceras, meaning “Straight Horn”, was a cephalopod that lived more than 400 million years ago. Its name refers to the characteristic long, straight, conical shell these possessed. The soft body lived in the last open-ended segment at the large end of the conical shell, the preserved fossilised shell is all that remains.
