Ichthyosaurs (meaning ‘fish lizard‘) were large marine reptiles that first appeared 250 million years ago, with at least one species surviving until round 90 million years ago where they became wiped out for as yet unclear reasons! It is believed they evolved from a group of terrestrial reptiles during the early Triassic period, initially looking rather like lizards with fins. The first complete fossil specimen was found by, the now famously known, Mary Anning in 1811 in Lyme Regis, UK.
