Iolite, also known as Cordierite and Water Sapphire, is a magnesium iron aluminium cyclosilicate. Iron is almost always present and a solid solution exists between Mg-rich cordierite and Fe-rich sekaninaite. The name “iolite” comes from the Greek word for violet.
