Geological Formation & Mineral Classification
Moonstone is a variety of feldspar, specifically belonging to the feldspar group within the tectosilicate subclass of silicate minerals. Most moonstone used in jewellery is composed of orthoclase and albite, two members of the feldspar family. Orthoclase (KAlSi₃O₈) is a potassium feldspar, while albite (NaAlSi₃O₈) is a sodium-rich plagioclase feldspar.
Moonstone forms in igneous environments, particularly within granitic pegmatites and silica-rich intrusive rocks. As molten magma cools slowly beneath the Earth’s surface, feldspar minerals crystallise. Under specific cooling conditions, alternating microscopic layers of orthoclase and albite develop through a process known as exsolution. These intergrown layers are responsible for the optical phenomenon that defines moonstone.
The mineral group feldspar was formally classified in early mineralogical studies during the 18th and 19th centuries as crystallography and chemical analysis advanced.
Optical Phenomenon & Structural Features
Moonstone is best known for its adularescence, a soft, billowy light effect that appears to float beneath the surface of the stone. This optical phenomenon occurs when light scatters between the microscopic intergrowth layers of orthoclase and albite. The result is a subtle glow that shifts as the stone moves.
In natural form, feldspar crystals typically develop as:
-
Blocky or prismatic crystals
-
Two directions of perfect cleavage
-
Vitreous to pearly lustre
-
Monoclinic crystal system (orthoclase component)
The pencil pendant cut reflects the natural crystal geometry while enhancing the surface polish to showcase the stone’s internal sheen. Subtle internal inclusions or faint zoning may be visible and are natural features formed during crystallisation within igneous environments.
Moonstone has a Mohs hardness of approximately 6–6.5, making it suitable for pendant jewellery when handled with care.
Geological Environment & Formation Conditions
Moonstone forms during the slow cooling of silica-rich magma in intrusive igneous settings. Granitic pegmatites provide ideal conditions for large feldspar crystals to develop. During cooling, chemical separation within the feldspar crystal structure produces lamellar intergrowths that later create the adularescent effect.
These geological processes may occur over millions of years deep within the continental crust. Subsequent uplift and erosion expose feldspar-bearing rocks, allowing gemstone-quality moonstone to be recovered.
The interplay between crystallisation rate, chemical composition, and cooling environment directly influences the strength and colour of the adularescence.
Jewellery Appeal & Everyday Wear
The pencil point design highlights the natural symmetry of feldspar crystals while offering a sleek and contemporary appearance. Its soft white tone and gentle sheen complement both silver and gold chains, making it versatile for various styles.
Moonstone has long been admired in jewellery traditions for its luminous beauty and understated elegance. The polished point form adds structure while preserving the stone’s natural character.
