Spinel is a magnesium aluminium oxide mineral. It is very popular in jewellery making, and comes in a variety of colours. When set in jewellery the stone is rather hard to distinguish from ruby. The more abundant colour of Spinel is red and this was at one time known as ‘Balas Ruby‘
